Folding the steel
Steel is folded and forged again and again to build the Damascus pattern.
A Damascus knife workshop in Dong But, Kieu Phu, Hanoi. Fifteen years carrying on the family trade, from a plate of steel to a finished knife.
About us
More than fifteen years in the trade, carrying on the craft of his father. Lead smith Nguyen Tien Viet folds, forges and creates the Damascus pattern himself — from raw steel to a finished knife.
Process
Steel is folded and forged again and again to build the Damascus pattern.
The Damascus is cut and joined to the core steel, then forged again until both become one complete billet.
The billet is cut to the knife’s profile, forged to shape, then trued to the exact profile.
Hardened, then tempered hot and cold so the blade is hard without turning brittle.
The edge is ground, the blade polished and sharpened on water stones, then etched to bring out the pattern.
The handle is made and bonded with adhesive. The result is a finished knife.
The people
Every knife is forged and finished in the workshop by the lead smith.
